Today’s solar cells consist of several individual layers, which include complex organic and inorganic materials. Tailored polymers and/or monomers can help to optimize their efficiency and are currently being developed at ISIS in cooperation with specialists from Ludwigshafen. On the one hand, computational chemists model so called HOMO-LUMO gaps to optimize the electron flow through the device which improves its efficiency, on the other hand, these simulations aid our understanding of the structural necessities to optimize our hand-crafted polymers and monomers for solar cell applications. The monomer layers synthesized at ISIS have shown to be very promising for the improvement of solar-cell life-cycles without any loss of efficiency.
