Today’s solar cells consist of several individual layers, which include complex organic and inorganic materials. Tailored polymers and/or monomers can help to optimize their efficiency and are currently being developed at ISIS in cooperation with specialists from Ludwigshafen. On the one hand, computational chemists model so called HOMO-LUMO gaps to optimize the electron flow through the device which improves its efficiency, on the other hand, these simulations aid our understanding of the structural necessities to optimize our hand-crafted polymers and monomers for solar cell applications. The monomer layers synthesized at ISIS have shown to be very promising for the improvement of solar-cell life-cycles without any loss of efficiency.

Foams

Protection of the environment has become more important than ever before.  The chemical industry plays a key role in the reduction of energy consumption. How do we do that? One example is by improving the isolation of buildings.  A large amount of the worldwide energy consumption can be assigned to the heating of buildings. Using modern isolation materials of BASF considerably reduces the needed amount of energy for keeping an acceptable temperature in homes and offices. Even though our isolating foams belong to the best on the market, we believe we can even do better in the future.  Here at ISIS, a part of the exploratory research is thus aimed at the development of improved foaming materials and formulations hereof.

Coatings

At BASF/ISIS we develop new coatings for industrial applications. Modern coatings fulfill an entire range of properties and are formulated for many different applications. Improved formulations can save both time and money for the applicants but are challenging to find.

In the team of Bernd Bruchmann in Strasbourg we cooperate with coatings specialists in Ludwigshafen. We improve the chemical components of today’s coatings by organic synthesis as well as develop and characterize future formulations based on BASF’s coating products.
